Fire Safety: Have you checked your Smoke Alarms recently?

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

Not only that... but did you know they should be replaced every 10 years (Fire Safety)?

That's right! Your smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years... I was called to a property very recently where one alarm had stopped working entirely, they were hoping to change that one, however after looking at the date it was clear that all three would need to be replaced!

The image below shows you the process involved in checking your own alarms, and as you can see there are only 4 steps involved!

Check your smoke alarms in these 4 easy to follow steps!
How to check your own smoke alarms

Many alarms will have, should have, a date in which they should be changed or when they were installed and should be changed after 10 years. When you do find out don't forget to make a note of the date so that you know when they should be changed.

If they're OK and they were manufactured less that 10 years ago you can put them back and check they're functioning by pressing the test button on each one independently (be careful if using a ladder), ensure that the sounder sounds and can be heard throughout the property. If your Smoke alarms are linked then check that when you press one all of the sounders work.

You may also want to consider changing the battery, yes even if your system is connected to the mains, it will have a 9V back up battery that will ensure they sound if there is a power cut.

Fire Safety is an important part of keeping your family safe, and if you have any questions regarding this or you have any other electrical needs or requirements you can take a look at my website to find out more or call Rich on 01761 751 441!
